My heartfelt sympathies go out to everyone affected by the tragic events at Virginia Tech University yesterday, especially the friends and families of the victims.

33 were killed and 15 injured when a gunman opened fire in a University building. The shooting rampage is the worst in the history of the United States.

As someone who has been lucky enough to study at an American University I still can't quite fathom what has happened, it makes you realise that your safety in educational institutions is something that you really take for granted.

A major question that will inevitably result from this tragedy is whether it's time for harsher gun controls in the US?
